Term: DOI
Definition: A type of Permanent Unique Object Identifier. A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency (the International DOI Foundation) to identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet. The publisher assigns a DOI when your article is published and made available electronically. Each DOI has metadata associated with it.
Examples: In DesignSafe DOIs are granted to resources that will be made publicly available and can be cited by others. After the DOI is assigned, the resource cannot be changed because it results on a permanent reference.
