Definition:

An abrupt equalization of electric potentials. In space, ESD can occur between objects or portions of a single object (see differential charging); ESD may occur locally within a dielectric or cable. The consequences may include material damage, a spacecraft anomaly, phantom commands, disrupted telemetry, and contaminated data.
