Definition:

A variable that uses successive bits toencode, this is bitwise encode, a set of conditions by using a compositedmultibit numeric value. A common example is a bitwise encoded flag thatdenotes whether various possible errors that may affect a particularmeasurement. For example, a bit value equal to zero may indicate the absenceof a particular error condition while a value equal to one would indicatethe possibility that the associated datum should be ignored or used withcaution due to the same error categorization.
