Definition: | Jokulhlaup's (an Icelandic term pronounced Yo-kul-hloips) are sudden outbursts of water released by a glacier. The water may be released from glacier cavities, sub-glacial lakes, and from glacier-dammed lakes in side valleys. Also known as 'glacial outburst floods'. A glacier outburst flood resulting from the failure of a glacier-ice-dam, glacier-sediment-dam, or from the melting of glacier ice by a volcanic eruption. |
