Definition:

Form finding is the process by which the optimal shape and size of a structure is defined so as to withstand loads with an efficient employment of material.

Examples:

Form finding of shell structures is achieved by determining the structural form such that a specific design load produces only membrane stresses and null bending, twist, and out-of-plane shear.
